Sincerest apologies for not posting since August which I regret it so much. I have been consumed with renovation work, etc etc... The list goes on which is not important now. The most important thing right now is an update for this blog! Hence, a photo update with my dearest nephew, Caden Khai Shen Gooi.

I went to Penang for a visit in October for 9 days with Aunt Mindy to sort a few things out - a trip which I have learnt a lot and I have seen some changes in a few people's lives, especially my Dad. I am so proud of him.

I am also proud to announce that Jules is a father now on August 15th 2011 (and I am an Uncle, of course!). His son is named Caden. Both he and Tyler are so adorable. Grandpa Dearest would be as proud (or maybe more proud than I am) as I am to have these two little boys (the sex isn't important - so long as the baby is born healthy) added to his family tree. ;)

Only bits and pieces, here and there, this blog is updated.

I apologise for the irregularity of blogging these couple of months as I have been absolutely flat out with family, friends, work as well as my house. Yes, my house.

Firstly, I would like to wish Wilson a Happy Birthday! Happy 27th Birthday my dear friend. A friend I have known since we were 11. Time flies.........

Secondly, I will upload photos of the house - before, during and after the renovation. My sincerest thank you to Laurie for helping me choosing this property and mentored/ helped me out with the major works; Michelle and Edward for being around always; Von for helping Laurie with the major works especially the kitchen and the floor; Ardi for bringing down the walls, timber posts and floor sanding; Florence, Michelle and Daniel for the painting; Phil and his fellow teammates for the rewiring; fellow builders and handy men...

Thirdly and lastly for now, I am moving on from my current position as an Electorate Officer to something new, something more challenging. Either to continue studying and working part time, or to find a job which I can climb the corporate ladder. Hm... Interesting times ahead.

Tyler Gooi, the new generation...

On July 18th, 2011 at 5.58AM, we (those in Malaysia, us in Australia and one in Canada) have welcomed a new generation and a new addition to the Song King Gooi's family tree. Irene and Lennard gave birth to a 3.25kg baby boy named Tyler back in Penang.

I am proud of the addition and hereby uploading some photos of Tyler Gooi taken from his Mum and Dad's Facebook accounts. Grandpa Dearest would have been so proud of the addition and delighted to have a great grandson...

What day is today?

It has been pretty quiet lately but it is just one of those times when I am not in the frame of mind to blog. I hope to get on with blogging more often when things have settled down.

Today is the shortest day for 2011 - June 21st. From today onwards, daylight comes earlier which means we are half way through the year and pretty much near Spring. I can't wait for the warmth to be back as long as it is not too humid or too wet.

Also, seeing that it is 21st already, settlement for my new house is in 10 days time! I am pretty excited with it all and I know I will be busy working on my house when the time comes.

On May 31st, 2011 approximately 600 people were selectively invited by His Worship, the Mayor of Launceston, together with the Examiner newspaper and a few other organisations to attend a function to acknowledge the Honourable Don Wing at 5.30PM to 7.00PM at the Albert Hall, Launceston.

I share with the North in thanking Don for all his doings for Tasmania, Launceston as well as for being such a great friend to me. He is (and has been for years) a mentor, and a close friend. I have enjoyed a great 3 years of working with him both in Hobart and in Launceston. I extend my best wishes to him for his retirement from the Legislative Council after serving for 29 years since June 1982.

I now look forward to the new chapter of Don Wing...

What is ANZAC Day?

ANZAC Day – 25 April – is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

What does ANZAC stand for?

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as ANZACs, and the pride they took in that name endures to this day.

Why is this day special to Australians?

When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 13 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The ultimate objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany.

The Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated, after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers had been killed. News of the landing on Gallipoli had made a profound impact on Australians at home, and 25 April soon became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in the war.

Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as the “ANZAC legend” became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways they viewed both their past and their future.

Happy Easter, peeps! The weekend filled with food and sweets - as well as, lovely company of family members and friends. On this day, with so much sweets around especially the different types of chocolate I shall quote Elaine Sherman from the "Book of Devine Indulgences" to comfort myself so that I don't feel bad when I am munching down on the gifts of chocolate where she says,

"Chocolate causes certain endocrine glands to secrete hormones that affect your feelings and behaviour by making you happy. Therefore, it counteracts depression, in turn reducing the stress of depression. Your stress-free life helps you to maintain a youthful disposition, both physically and mentally. Camp Quality GIGGLE for everyone!!!

Camp Quality's well know robotic puppet called GIGGLE came over from the mainland to visit this island of ours known as Tasmania! He brought his friends, Kylie and Dean with him.

They were here with the CEO of Camp Quality, Mr Simon Rountree and the lovely two puppet masters, Steph and Chris from Melbourne for our Family Room official launch on April 7th last.

It was nice meeting Simon, the puppet masters as well as other CQ friends who are in the Sourth.

Road Trip - To Swansea and back in a day!

Being adventurous on a weekend is one of the many ways one should enjoy life outside work.

A couple of weeks ago, which the photos will do the 'talking', Ed took me on a road trip to Swansea and back in a day where we have a quick stop for take away coffee (for me) and light brekkie at FRESH, Campbell Town.

Then, lunch at Kabuki by the Sea, Swansea.

The best musical performance I have ever attended in my 26 years of life. I haven't been to many, yet somehow Mary Poppins left a tender mark in my life... Hence, the purchase of the Mary Poppins CD (Australian Casts).

A glimpse of my interstate travelling to visit the loved ones in Melbourne last week. The iPhone was much used to snap photos of foods rather than my beloved family members. Hence, there aren't many but better than none.

The main reason I was there wasn't for these cute little red packets (from Aunt Mindy and Uncle Will) but for what I have missed out during Chinese New Year having to have stayed back in Launnie for work and other commitments.

Last Week in Melbourne: Aunt's Delights

I was in Melbourne for a week (Sunday, February 20th to Saturday, February 26th). It was a trip solely for family, although I managed to meet up with a couple of friends.

The warmth and the love of family, especially Aunt Mindy. Some of her many homemade treats/ dishes/ meals:

Chinese New Year: The Celebration

How my Chinese New Year was celebrated... A celebration with the Tans and a few close friends in Launceston - a simple get together steamboat dinner.

This year, I could not celebrate Chinese New Year with my Melbourne family as Michelle is away (therefore, no one to take care of the kids) and work didn't really permit me to go away. Having said that, I will be going over to Melbourne this coming Sunday for a week to be with my family members whom I have 'neglected' during the 15 days of Chinese New Year.

I guess it will be a good one seeing that I will be there to celebrate the grant of Permanent Residency; meeting up with a few close friends; going to have brekkie with two lovely ladies; and maybe some shopping.

How Expensive is Expensive?

I ask the question: "How expensive is expensive?"

Having to go through making payments for a couple of things in the last few weeks, as well as today, I take up the view point that our current lifestyle is pretty expensive. I personally think that my lifestyle is expensive. This is said because I have a monthly car loan to pay; a rental property where the rent is paid fortnightly (which I guess I am paying the owner of the property to cover for her/his house mortgage - this is why I am anxious to get my own so that I don't have to pay for something which doesn't belong to me!); another rental property which Jules is paying for (for Dennis); annual car registration; annual car insurance premium; and miscellaneous bills (power, telephone, mobile, internet, health, water).

Things aren't as expensive when you have drafted out the entire "estimated annual account of affordability" to see whether you can afford to do so much in such minute salary (my salary isn't actually minute yet we know human beings are the only living creatures in this planet earth which will NEVER be satisfied with the things they have - always wanting more!).

In reality, things don't really come as estimated. You always have to struggle due to circumstances such as inflation; economy; employment; temptation; etc. On average a person struggles financially at least a couple of times a year. For example, things become pretty expensive when your bank is in its MINUS state. Or, when you have used up your saved monies which you needed them for emergency purposes. Blah!

I don't rule this out: "Maybe, and maybe only, that this is the living-style of a Gen-Y. To save is a no no, but to spend, always a YES. Aye?"

Estimations do not work well (in honestly, it does not work well for me). I fail big time with estimations. Yet, no matter how expensive things are now and how creepy is the word 'inflation' I KNOW that it is time I grow up, settle down and set a proper livable life in Launceston i.e. to change my mindset towards spending and to own a house I call HOME.

For things I cannot afford still: I blame 50% on my prior commitment; 40% on inflation; and 10% on my lacking in will-power to rebuff spending (it can be a 50/50 game).

Saying goodbye wasn't easy,

Acquainting ourselves reality is a comeback,

The routine returns, the norm rejoins,

I look forward to another year, with fun times in between.

The Early Morning Stroll

The morning filled with quietness,

The feeling of my heart at peace,

My mind was at ease,

My worries were nowhere to be seen.

One early morning at the port,

Where the summer dawn warmed the night's coolness,

I felt the tenderness of the light breeze,

I felt the balmy rays of sunlight.

The early morning stroll,

When things were calm and still,

I saw strollers with friendly faces and warm smiles,

Beamed by the morning sun, touched by the delicate breeze.

Blue sky was dusted with light clouds,

The chirpy sound of the birds, I enjoyed,

The waves approached the beach slowly but surely,

A morning with soft breeze.

How blue the sky was, I thought,

The water was bluer with the reflection,

Making the early morning even more perfect,

For an unblemished stroll along the beach.

Time, as all human knows, flies,

Too fast too quick too soon,

Gone were the five nights,

There weren't many perfect morning strolls either.

When the early morning stroll was undertook,

Only on perfect mornings, or almost,

Walking along with expanded feelings,

Of how things there were different to reality back here.

The view ever so composed,

My mind ever so peaceful,

Loving the nature and what it brings,

I adore the early morning serenity.

How beautiful the rays of sunlight,

The affection they bring to our planet earth,

Perceived I was by the stunning reflections,

My invaluable familiarity with nature.

When I strolled I think of my life,

Recollecting how lucky I am,

I am very thankful for what I have,

Much more thankful having to be alive.

From the morning stillness, much is learnt,

How senseless it would be to dwell in the past,

How valuable life is each day to those alive today,

As everyday brings about a new beginning...

The word 'perfect' doesn't come with my life,

What is available for us is what we need to do with,

This is how I try to perfect my life,

Today is the first day of the first month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar (have I lost you yet?!).

I did consider purchasing some Chinese New Year decorative for the house when I was in Sydney. It was tempting but then, I don't see the point - not that I will be getting visitors this year.

Last Weekend in Sydney

Before last weekend's Sydney trip, my last Sydney visit was two years and two months ago when Grandma Dearest, Mum, Dad and two of my cousins came for my graduation late 2008.

This trip it was nice to have met and spent some time with Elizabeth, Chien Hoong's girlfriend.

It was also a weekend with a couple of first time experiences, such as,

savoured gourmet Crab Meat Pasta at a tavola;
had High Tea at TheLoft;
tried Charcoal Bun (which tasted like a normal bun) from Bread Top, and
some nice Shanghai Steamed and Fried Pork Dumplings at New Shanghai Restaurant, Ashfield.

My sincerest apology for not updating my blog as I was away at camp for 6 days (Camp Quality), and then Sydney for 5 days (I only got back yesterday).

How much humility is poured by the friends I have made,

I search for the smiles on these teens when my day has gone sour,

Many across the Nation and the world would know that Australia has been hit hard with floods. From Queensland to New South Wales, then to Tasmania and Victoria. As Queensland is recovering from the devastating floods, with Sydney and Tasmania's flood-ravaged areas too, have recovered, Victoria now is facing the hit. The flood crisis in Victoria could be the worst - ever recorded. My thoughts are with the flood victims...

My heart goes out to all flood victims,

It may be a struggle for many,

Some may find it difficult to cope,

If you think all hope is gone, think again...

With sincerest thank you to the everyday heroes,

Coming out with open hands and warm hearts,

Everyone is a hero at such times...

Bringing hopes, warmth and comfort to the needy.

I applause the volunteer army,

Updates on my life status. =)

A Friday lunch with a dear friend, Florence, at Blue Cafe, Inveresk. It was pouring hard on that day yet time and place have been planned. Albeit the wetness on that day, the lunch and the company were brilliant - especially the catching up and our plans for this new year.

We both had the same orders: Bang Bang Chicken and Apple and Pear Cake.

One of the things I don't normally do i.e. Baking. I just do not have the patience to bake - especially cookies, but I was trying out Aunt Mindy's Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe on Friday evening. Although it was a success, I nearly gave up if it weren't for Ed to guide me throughout the mixing process (on the phone) and for Mich to have helped me. We have a dodgy cake mixer tool (which I ended up whisking the mixture with a whisk) and not knowing we have got not baking trays (ended up mixing everything and kept the mixture in the fridge until we went to get 2 cookie trays from Harris Scarfe the next day).

A new year a new start... How much I have missed the card game with the family members!

Aunt Mindy prepared so much food for, let me see, one... two... Seven of us. There were Chicken, Lamb, Sausages, Sweet Potatoes, and, her home made Satay Chicken (tasted exactly like Penang Satays!).

Christmas Day is celebrated by almost everyone - religious or non-religious.

This year, slightly different to the years before where I usually spend this special Day with my family, it was an honour to have celebrated my Christmas with the Sorianos (Florence and Von). And pre-Christmas, an evening of undivided attention from a certain someone. ;)

I truly enjoyed unwrapping presents from loved ones (especially from a certain someone...), and friends yesterday morning. It would have been more special if presents could be unwrapped with someone around.. But Christmas is the time for family. Understandable.

A few more hours to Melbourne and I am looking forward to quality time with family. Yet, I know, I will be missing a few here in Tassie.

Christmas in 9 sleeps

It is soon Christmas. 10 more days to be exact. I can count yet the shopping is still going. Christmas cards aren't sent out yet, and I am still waiting for the sets of cards I ordered from Queensland to arrive.

Apart from that, there isn't much to blog seeing I have been preoccupied with work - trying to organise things and stuff before we close for Christmas and for the New Year.

There can be no picnic when it's wet

I was away from the office and Launnie on Thursday and Friday for a training at Parliament House, Hobart and for our annual Legislative Council Electorate Officers' meeting. The get together of State-wide colleagues, the ties created between colleagues from bonding times, the ongoing supply of food,...

I was only down in Hobart for a night and we were booked into Custom House Hotel (I wouldn't recommend the accommodation but one should try out the restaurant).

Camp Quality Christmas Party at the Hollybank Treetops Adventure (15 minutes drive out of Launceston) on Saturday from 9AM to 3PM. Ed has to drop me off at the adventurous station because I was unsure how well I could cope after the whole activity. I did well. Quoting N, "Mission banish-fear-of-heights accomplished" - indeed it was, although on the highest platform there was a slight anxiety attack called convulsion. In other words, my lower body was actually shivering due to the involuntary muscles contraction of both my legs. I was pleased I went and overcame the phobia (approximately 25% gone?). It was at the longest cable (400 metres) that I looked down to adore the river flow, and took a thrill out of the forest canopy.

There was supposed to be an outdoor activity called picnic on Saturday arvo after a quick rest and shower from the treetops adventure. Ed came prepared with the arvo food delights only to realise that the weather did not permit such a thing called picnic! We did, however, go for a brief walk at the Duck Reach Station and did an indoor picnic at my place (away from the wet windy condition). Above is a photo taken along the trail to the Station: "Wild Mushroom".

The healthy picnic food prepared by Ed was savoured indoor with the movie, Inception, playing. There were Chicken with Avo, Tomatoes, Sun Dried Tomatoes, and Cheese Buns; Smoked Salmon Dips with Rice Crackers; Apples; Chocolate; Peanut Nut Snaps; Stuffed Vine Leaves; Fruit Juices; and Yoghurt. Many thanks for preparing a selection of tasty healthy food. ;)

Today was a restful day. Did the usual - Red Cross, laundry, organised my wardrobe. Lunch was just some toasts with canned tuna and the last Chicken Bun. Dinner, on the other hand, was a Christmas meal. Ed brought over some Shaved Ham; Moroccan Chops; Prawn Dips; Salad; Avo (which was untouched); and Cheese and Crackers. We finished up the evening with the Fruit Yoghurt prepared the day before. Ah.. The festive season is just around the corner! I still have got the final piece of "I now call Tasmania Home: The People".

It was just pure fun last Saturday. A drive out to the country towns with Maria and Matt, along with the three bikers - Dan, Mathieus and Von.

Firstly, it was Scottsdale (the town centre we passed by on the way) then Ledgerwood to meet Maria's new mini poodle puppy's breeder, Maxine. To my knowledge, breeders aren't as friendly and as loving as the said Maxine. She is a very polite lady, an animal lover, an experience breeder and someone with heaps of knowledge about canine, and her kennel's layout is proper. I am very pleased with her and the way she handles her dogs.

After an hour plus of playing with the puppy and getting to know the little one better, we (except Mathieus) headed off to Bridport's Golf Links (recommended by Maxine) for lunch. The lunch was good!

From lunch, we ended up at the beach near Bridport's Caravan Park. The lot went into the water. I, on the other hand, preferred sun-baking. I had a good dose of Vitamin D.

Melbourne in November: Food

Aunt Pauline, Uncle Ron and Grandma are now back in Penang after a long 10 weeks here in Australia, based in Melbourne. Both Aunt P and Uncle R were busy building a nice deck in the backyard of Niblick Street, whilst Grandma was enjoying her lovely time with Aunt Mindy and Uncle Will - not forgetting her time spent with her daughter and family - Aunt Y and family.

I have been busy at work as well as at home (more like being lazy) to upload photos of home-cooked food prepared by Aunt M, some takeaways which I had at the Niblick Home and a night out with the Law-lings. ;)

The Night Out with my Law-lings at Quanjude Chinese Restaurant

Quanjude specialises in Beijing Peking Duck. It was the Thursday night of the November trip where I met up with Debbie, Siao Ping and Preya for dinner. The catching was a much needed one to keep ourselves posted with what we have been doing over the years after Uni and when work has started.

The dishes we ordered were: Black Pepper Pork Ribs (which was good); Steamed Patagonian Tooth Fish (white fish with excellent texture - steamed and prepared well); and of course, the Gourmet Peking Duck (served with pancakes, cucumber, spring onions and hoisin sauce).

Little was served by the time the chef prepares and slices the duck to be dished outs. Well, like Cliff has said, it is a "gourmet centre" and it is the taste you enjoy.

Will I got for a next round? Maybe... But I might try the other Beijing Peking Duck Specialists in Victoria/ New South Wales.

PS, Quanjude may have to improve on the mannerisms of their waiting staff. The way we were waited by the waitresses was pretty much unimpressive for a "lavish" Chinese Restaurant (you don't lean across the table to change the plates, or picking up the sauces/ dishes without the polite question: May I?, or you don't just drop the plates in front of your customers).

The Food

Coming from an Asian country and of an Asian heritage, it was a challenge, if not a struggle, when I first set foot on this island Down Under when it comes to Asian food. The authenticity of Asian food was scarce. There were only Wing & Co. off Sandy Bay Road (opposite Coles) and Chinese Emporium in North Hobart for Asian products in Hobart, and a couple of take away shops around Hobart serving Asian-fusion (whereby, most of the dishes taste alike).

Luckily enough, some of Mum's cooking along with Aunties' cooking are not as authentic as Grandma dearest. This means, even before coming out from my comfortable nutshell, I have tasted different types of cooking such as Asian-fusion or Western food.

Living in Tasmania, I come to learn how to create/ make simple homemade dishes I used to eat at home (even until today I am still learning how to produce home-cooked dishes with what I have in the pantry). G. C. Lightenberg once said, "Ask yourself always: How can this be done better?"

My palate almost always goes for the Australian cuisine rather than Asian-fusion because I reckon (not to self praise) I can cook better than the Asian restaurants (apart from Me Wah, Launceston) and take away shops. Quoting Abraham Lincoln, "Whatever you are, be a good one." Why Australian cuisine is mostly the pick in Tasmania is because of its derivation - British, Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai, Mediterranean, Italian, Greek, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Spanish, Turkish, German, African, as well as the French influence.

I have reached THE particular point where I have come to love Tassie-land for what She is and the different cultures She carries... However, over the years, Tasmania has since improved in Her taste for food. Not only Asian foods are pretty much "in demand" and a few shops mushroomed in Her vicinities - Hobart and Launceston, other types of cuisines are being introduced. To be honest, I do crave for good Asian food hence the travelling to Melbourne. I often travel to Melbourne to visit my family members. That is when I have the chance to savour good Asian food and also to enjoy home-cooked food, particularly Aunt Mindy's cooking.

"In today's era, every where you go, there is always food. It is how you learn to eat and taste the different tastes, texture and culinary skills. And from the learning, you enjoy what is served in front of you. Maybe the food may not be as good but the people are kind... Maybe the food is good but you find yourself in a ruthless environment... It is the overall distinctive quality from the preparation to the serving and its end product, where I denote the food as an excellent choice."

Just something random off my head right now - feeling. I am heading off to Melbourne and I should try to write a post or two when I am there. "I now call Tasmania Home" has two more parts to it and I am trying to work on finalising these two pieces.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

NOTE: Sadly, the photo shows injustice towards this homemade dish. On the other hand, this cooking needs a lot of Sesame Oil and the ingredients (sauces) are just off the pantry shelves.

There are a combination of few dishes to prepare a set meal of Hainanese Chicken Rice (without onions). Serves 4 - 5.

SOUP (Stock)

5 cloves Garlic (quick whack and remove skin)
1.5 tsp Crushed/ Finely chopped Ginger
8-10 Chicken Drumsticks (with skin)
2 tbsp Fish Sauce
2 tbsp Oyster Sauce
2 tbsp Soy Sauce
Some white pepper
1 tsp Sesame Oil
1.5 litres Water

Method: Mix all ingredients and bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and allow to simmer for 1.5 hours. Remove and discard skin from chicken (keep skin for your dog?) - put chicken back into stock.

RICE (Prepare 2 hours before meal time)

4 cups Rice (washed and drained)
2 cloves Garlic (finely chopped)
1/2 cup Cooking Oil
1 tbsp Sesame Oil
1 tsp Fish Sauce

Methods:

Saute finely chopped garlic in the cooking oil (in low heat) until brown.
Add stock in the pot of rice until the mark (leave some stock for soup). Then add 1.5 tsp garlic oil, sesame oil and fish sauce - mix well.
Leave rice to "marinate" for 2 hours - for taste.
ADDITIONAL: If you have got some Pandan Leaves (Pandanus Amaryllifolius) in the freezer, put two leaves into the pot. The leaves add more flavours!

SAUCE

1 tbsp Garlic Oil (previously prepared)
2 tbsp ABC Sauce
1 tbsp Soy Sauce
1 tsp Fish Sauce
1 tsp Sesame Oil
Some pepper
3 tbsp Chicken Stock

Method: Mix all ingredients in a small sauce pot and bring to boil. Turn off heat and allow to cool.

CHICKEN (Prepare once rice is cooked)

Prepared sauce
Sesame Oil
Garlic Oil

Methods:

Dish chicken from excess stock. Pour half of the prepared sauce over the chicken.
Add a few drops of sesame oil and garlic oil on the chicken.

VEGGIE (Prepare once rice is cooked)

2 bunches Baby Broccoli (or a few stalks of Chinese Broccoli/ Bok Choy)
Prepared Sauce
Some pepper
Sesame Oil
Garlic Oil

Method: Cook veggies (to your liking) in the soup to preserve the nutrients. Dish up. Pour the rest of the sauce over the veggies. Sprinkle some pepper, sesame oil and garlic oil.

Serve excess stock as soup.

Just as fresh as the memories of weddings, family gatherings, family trips, as well as the hours of flying back to Penang for three weeks, it was a year ago that my generation of Gooi's travelled back to Penang for Irene and Lennard's wedding mid-November 2009, together.

As the Hokkien saying goes, "A blink and there goes a year..."

The Wilderness

Parts #1 and #2 are the "making" cum introduction of the entire piece. Bits and pieces of the first few weeks of life's experience and expectations when I first arrived in Tasmania which then fast-forwarded to positive winding up paragraphs. Life is ever changing, but life here in Tasmania changes in a positive way. To its best.

This beautiful State is separated from the other States and Territories of Australia by the Bass Strait. Being an island rich of World Heritage Wilderness with a population of slightly more than 500,000, it is densely forested with mountainous regions around the island.

Tasmania, known to the locals as well as to Australians and to the rest of the world, has one of the cleanest air and water in this planet. Its rich agricultural standard of living is just spectacular. Flora and fauna live close to each other; making Tasmania stunning as it is. Tasmania was first known as the Van Diemens Land.

In the last 5 years, I have been to the South of the island (as I used to live in Sandy Bay, Hobart), the East Coast (Bicheno, Freycinet - Wine Glass Bay, St Marys), the North (as I now live in Launceston), the North East and West (La Trobe, Devonport, Burnie, Smithton), as well as the Central (Cradle Mountain). I will be making a trip to the West Coast (Strahan, Queenstown) with Ed when time permits us to travel - foreseeing end of the year, or mid 2011 (either before or after Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding ceremony).

Previous years, I am not really an outdoor person - I prefer to train/ exercise in a gymnasium. I wouldn't mind going for a hike or two with Mum when I am back in Penang visiting, or even when I was living in Penang I enjoyed hiking with Mum [very seldom as it was a tedious activity (humidity itself puts me off!)]. Also, I wouldn't mind just being outdoor to soak up some "al naturale" Vitamin D - Ahhh... The reason why I am always tan/ brown. But now, or in these few years, I come to like outdoor activities; evidently after Uni life particularly towards bush-walking. On weekends when the weather is bright and sunny I crave for a walk in the bush. Its climate makes it more bearable and tolerable to be outdoor.

When I walk "with" the wilderness, I walk off the pressure and stress of life. I especially like bush-walking with S because we can catch up on things, or with Ed... Not only can Ed and I catch up on things, I can learn a lot from him who happens to like bush-walking more than I do and knows it quite well - Tassie born and bred! Besides the company, I get to be adventurous being in contact with flora and fauna such as Echidna (see the photo shown below) can just be a 'human touch' away, likewise with Wallabies, Snakes, Spiders, etc...

Quoting "About Tasmania" from Discover Tasmania,

Tasmania is Australia's only island state. It is a heart-shaped island of lush green valleys, uncrowded towns and villages and still undeveloped coastlines.

It is one of the world's most mountainous islands and while our peaks do not tower to great heights, they are unique in their serrated profile. Our geology reflects our connection millions of years ago to Antarctica, and we are one of the few places in the world where ancient dolorite rocks dominates the landscape.

Our climate is mild and our rainfall regular. The Roaring Forty winds that travel across our island bring with them the cleanest air in the world. But in less than 300 kilometres the weather patterns change dramatically. On the west coast the average rainfall is around three metres a year, while on the east coast it's less than 20 centimetres. Hobart, our capital is incongruously Australia's second driest large city.

So we invite you to come to the edge of the world ... truly a world apart, not a world away, and to explore our island and meet our residents. It will be an experience you will always remember.

The title of this blog post says it all... I now call Tasmania Home. From a city to a countryside, it doesn't stop my strong desire to say I am a nature lover from birth. Tasmania suits my lifestyle well. Actually, the whole of Australia suits me well. In my case, Tassie is the choice as I have come to learn how to live in this island, I have come to befriend this island, I have come to love this island as it is... Five years and counting, Tassie is My Home.

The Isle of Richness,

Rich in Flora and Fauna,

Coastlines so attractive and untouched,

Attractive as it is, I have come to love.

Always an effort to live on,

From busy streets I first walked on,

To a quiet pleasing town,

I sometimes jetset interstate to "harden" up.

The Accommodation

Struggling to find an accommodation the first week was a big put off. I was at the verge of giving up everything and to turn around going back to Penang was tempting. Seriously. Yet, I was taught not to give up and I was encouraged by many to keep trying... Which I did. Thankfully.

After being dropped off by the University pick-up service for first year International students at the Backpackers' Inn, the four of us had to do everything ourselves [1 female (P), 3 males (J, W and myself)]. Just imagine the fear we felt, the stress we had to go through; the hardship in a foreign land. Each day for nearly a week, we spent hours and hours searching for rental properties, going to rental agencies, walking around the University's housing area (Sandy Bay, Lower Sandy Bay, Churchill Avenue, etc.) with our heavy backpacks (not wanting to leave behind valuable items in the Backpackers').

All those times used for hunting around for houses, looking through the newspapers for advertisement articles, little did we know that you have to have some record history of previous renting before the rental agency could let the property out to you. We knew nothing of this, and we were told nothing of this - until further down the track when I have been in Tasmania for months did I realise such is the case. Blah!

Many would say, it was a turmoil moment. I wouldn't. It builds our characters up - when there is a will, there is a way. We met a few new friends from the Orientation and were assisted by them. I got a place in the University Accommodation which I shared my room with J and W for a week before they finally found a room outside of University Accommodation.

To stay optimism was the way to go. Same goes with whatever we do, today, tomorrow and in the near future.

From that day onwards, even after moving out from the University Accommodation, looking for a rental property seems like "a piece of cake" compared to what we have been through when we first arrived. [Out of the four of us, I am the only who is still in Tasmania. P has moved to Adelaide. J and W have moved back to the hometowns in Malaysia.] The hurdles are nothing. The most would be to go searching for other rental properties if the ones we applied for failed the selection criterion.

The beautiful thing that came out of this accommodation experience was "soul-searching". I got to see who hung around, guiding and supporting you through the tough times. I learnt how to "see" beneath the cloaked characters - sometimes, failure happens. What I gained from the whole picture is the maxim: Love Thy Neighbour - the Golden Rule of the most essential basis for today's concept of human rights, arguably. Last but not least, the self preservation of not giving up easily (best, not giving up at all!).

The advice I always put forward to new university students moving out from home studying in Tasmania, be it local or international, "Rental properties are scarce in Tasmania.You need to secure a place before the final move is made." The Tasmanian University Union has since became more involved with students' welfare (which they were supposed to be doing so - yet failed! years ago). Even the University itself is doing a fabulous job in looking after students' needs and wants. Kudos!

The Touch Down

Late 2005, I made the biggest decision to continue my higher education in Australia. That was after a month worth of Australian travelling with a friend, Leon, from New South Wales to Queensland to Victoria in October 2005.

A leap decision was made straight after I exited Sydney International Airport after a 10 hour flight from Malaysia. And I have never looked back.

There were two universities to choose from: Queensland University of Technology or University of Tasmania. The latter was picked, no doubt.

Early 2006, I was in Melbourne for nearly three weeks before the final flight over to Hobart, Tasmania. I have never visited this Island Down Under; couldn't be bothered to google it or to read up on it; and all I know about Hobart was from my Parents (Dad loves Tasmania) and Jules - as it was one of the destinations Jules took them to when they were in Australia for his graduation in 2004.

I was anxious when I had to bit my goodbyes to my family members and besties in Melbourne. The separation was unbearable as I was thinking to myself, "It is going to be a new start and everything is going to be new - new faces, new place, new things, new life" - apart from Michelle (lucky enough, her brother was my besties' flatmate) which I came to know in Melbourne and until today, she is my closest/ oldest friend in Tasmania (and my flatmate for 4 years now!).

As a city boy from Penang, Malaysia, and having to have lived in a city all my 20 plus years, Hobart was a big change. I would say, the biggest change.

Touching down Hobart International Airport, exactly as I have imagined from Jules' stories about this quiet little Island, clearly I did not foresee how remote it would be. The vast flat farming lands on both sides of the airport highway, how different it was to Melbourne (and still is) - lesser highway lanes, lesser vehicles on the highway, etc. Up until when we were approaching the Tasman Bridge and when we could see the CBD (Central Business District) of Hobart, I became pretty uneasy with the whole thing of coming to a countryside to study! Yes, a COUNTRYSIDE was what I thought of it! The mistrust of my decision...

The university pick up dropped us (4, including me) off at a Backpackers' Inn in the city. The experience was horrifying. I was appalled by what the university have done. Although I have forgiven the university for the shocking experience of what we have been put through, I do not think I will ever forget the whole event. I shall not dwell on it - I might go into details in my other writings. A week of backpackers' experience with no help even from, what known to be a family tie who lives in Hobart. It was the newly made friends who have helped us getting through the tough times and to this day, I am very grateful.

Today, Hobart has changed so much even though I now live in Launceston. No longer a city which closes at 5PM. In actual fact, the whole of Tasmania has had a changeover. A much needed revision of its lifestyle - a positive adaptation to today's modern culture.

Learning the hard way

One of the peculiarities of human beings is that we tend to learn better when we are put through extraordinary circumstances. This has been proven during the weekend by my ever-so-stubborn flatmate.

Michelle was out with the kids, taking them out for their normal late afternoon/ evening walk when the accident happened. Mich has always been very stubborn in putting the leash on for our little Princess. It would be different if it is Mr Petie Gooi as he doesn't obey (or, he bullies her!) any instructions from Mich. She kept on insisting that with some treats, Rubbsy could do without a leash.

So, as I was away for Camp Quality: Camp in a Day at Port Sorell - an hour plus drive away, she took them out walking. The accident of "hit and run" happened when they were approaching home. Rubbsy was on the roadside (curbside), which from personal analysis (Mich and neighbour), when a BOGAN driver who was driving along the street saw her and stirred the car towards her. The driver has got mates in the car. Thus, the 'showing off' ritual took off - moving towards her with high speed. That ended badly when, instead of her running inwards onto the curb, she dashed out into the road - resulting in a "hit and run" accident.

The brainless, immoral, self-indulgent driver with the group of friends (who I believe carry brains as big as green peas!) did not bother stopping to check and see whether the little one is alright. Yes, they might be in shock and that the playful act turned wrong, but that does not rule out responsibility, yea? Mich was in the wrong, no doubt, for not putting the leash on nevertheless what they did was not only cruel; them running away shows the true nature of their undignified selves.

(Note: We are unsure of the driver's sex)

I am pleased to say that we have got caring neighbours in our neighbourhood especially those living next door to us, in front of us, as well as the opposite side. A lady, who has two dogs and all new in motherhood, saw the whole incident and came out to assist Mich (oh, that reminds me I have to give her back the washed towel) and directed her to the Vet Hospital on Charles Street. "Our little Princess was probably in pain that she laid there still." She came out of the accident with only bruised tongue - she has bitten her own tongue, and her right lower jaw (mandible) was slightly scratched. The vet told Michelle, "Rubbsy is very lucky."

No more next time, huh?

Apart from the "eventful" day for Michelle and the kids, the Camp in a Day was magnificent. The weather was just beautiful on Saturday - warm and sunny. I caught up with a few friends at the Camp and made a couple of new friends, and met some campers with their family members. Got my face painted as a doggie; had fun with the BBQ burner; loved helping out at the Kayak Station as well as filling up the balloons with water and the mechanical surf board.

Rubbsy was on 24 hours close watch just in case there might be undetectable internal injuries. I was out for nearly 5 hours on Saturday night with some gym/ close friends for dinner and clubbing, and when I got back she has shown great signs of recovery - the pain killer was wearing off. Not only that, our little Princess was back to her normal self in the morning - all excited for a short walk before a car ride to the vet. Lucky girl! And Mich has learnt the hard way...

I express my sincerest thanks to Jan Cameron for her on-going support in Tasmania advocating for one of her many passions that is, the improvement of animal welfare in this State.

Six backed
RSPCA benefactor Jan Cameron has placed her support behind six candidates ahead of elections for the RSPCA Tasmanian board. Ms Cameron indicated Dr Paul Swiatkowski, Brett Steele, Graeme Sturges, Eric Gooi, Heather Butler and Angela Ayling had shown the necessary leadership and outlook needed to improve animal welfare in the state.

"I'm not interested in the past I want to move on, with the right people in the job, with one objective bettering the welfare of animals across Tasmania," Ms Cameron said.

This piece is written for a certain someone who I know is pretty disappointed and dismayed at the moment. Thankfully, this person is surrounded by the warmth, love and comfort of family and friends... I do hope things will get better. I am sorry I can't be around at this time. Let's try to be optimistic again, together.

The Encouragement

There are days such as this,

Nothing seems possible or right,

Beyond what you've learnt so far in life,

The eagerness to succeed,

The desire to dream,

All seems unwinnable, hopeless.

It's a mad mad world, is it?

When it comes to weekdays, for a normal person with a normal job, be if part-time or full-time, her/his life is pretty much a routine. The Norm: wake up; get ready for work; head off to work (sometimes rushing as you might have woken up late or had too long a shower); work until Close of Business; back home (hit the gym, watch some TV, make dinner and lunch for the next day); time for bed. The practice goes on as a routine from Monday to Thursday perhaps.

This means, you don't usually have time to meet up with friends for a cuppa and to catch up on the latest gossip or news of a certain someone, or a certain issue. To make time for such 'activity' may be time consuming, may be very difficult, or it may be out of the question seeing that a routine is always hard to encroach on. How mad is our world we now live in?

No doubt that technology has offered us plenty in the current era with Blogs, Email Accounts, Facebook, Photo Streams, Twitter, Websites, and so much more, face to face meet ups are still desired. We are only humans. We do need some affections like embracement and touches to comfort and to warm our souls. (I do not think there is anyone who would disagree with me on this...)

No matter how difficult it is at times, I try to accommodate a meet up or two on a weekday. Or, if I am out of my normal working environment like last Friday when I was in Hobart, I managed to go out and have a quick pleasant lunch with my Southern colleague, Ms S (as well as some catching up at Parliament House). Also, there was some time to see Janice and Dennis for a bit, called in at Abel's workplace briefly, went to the Law Faculty to get some details for Masters, and a stop at Jackman & McRoss Bakery at Battery Point for my all time favourite Egg and Bacon Pie.

Although brief and quick at times, a simple "hi" and "goodbye" makes the heart smile. It is a mad mad world we live in, but our bodies, minds and souls do need a break from this mad world - from time to time, relaxation and catching up do work wonders. It isn't all that a mad mad world if we can find time for ourselves.

PS, There shouldn't be any reason needed for you to catch up with a close relative or a good friend. Besides, taking time off from everything is good - or even some lonesome time helps you to unwind.

I know this is nothing new but I would like to rant about this, "Life is full of surprises!"

Yesterday's RSPCA Tasmania Incorporation's Annual General Meeting (AGM) was an eye opener. I now know who are truthful, sincere, honest, and actually think with facts rather than adopting the "tagging along with friends" attitude (politics and personal agendas). First time in ages I felt that being quiet was all worth it. Although the attack was like a war-cum-combat zone with unjustified accusations, I am pleased to say that to defend may have given the other party the enjoyment. I sincerely thank those who have supported. But who are friends, who are not, it is a difficult task to determine...

I have since then put myself together after an eventful arvo, asking myself when I was on my way to see Allan this arvo, "How would those who have enjoyed the accusations/ defamatory comments, when they are made against you in a public forum, feel?" Put yourself in our pairs of shoes, I have the temerity to say some of you would have cried a river load of tears. Yet one is never good enough in some others' eyes - people might just dislike you without even knowing you. Such is one of the human characters - Judging.

On par with what I have given as a member and as a volunteer to the RSPCA Tasmania Incorporation, I am proud to say that as a Board Member, the current status of the Society is way better than what it has been last year, or the year before, or the years before. I am thankful for the devoting efforts from the staff members as well as the volunteers and our Tasmanian community as a whole (and those around the world who have contributed significantly).

I am also pleased to say that I do see a lot of people with their hearts for the welfare of the animals in Tasmania, particularly a large numbers of those who attended the AGM yesterday. We may see things from different levels, or you might dislike me [due to whatever reason(s) or excuse(s)], there is a uniformity - the goal to achieve the best for the Society. Of course, as a charitable organisation (a non-governmental Society), donation plays a huge part of the funding even though every good management structure needs a Marketing Officer (who is Colin in our Society) to attract more revenues to keep the organisation alive; not an Education Officer (it is the bigger picture which we are targeting at - the Community as a whole), or an organisation with business like minded people (whereby trying to go without donations and making its end products the saleable items, what would be for sale in the RSPCA which carries the slogan "For Creatures Great and Small").

Today, whilst walking along the small streets of Evandale (a suburb outside of Launceston near the airport) with Ed, I saw a little silver fish (Salmon or Trout) in a flow of water flowing along the curb of the road after a signal from a bird (its poo caught my attention as it landed near it). I went to look at the little one and guess what, it was still breathing. I picked it up and released it into the sewer (a higher chance of it surviving).

The uncertainties of life entails the surprises,

Alike what I have been through the last two years,

Never would I thought I could put up with them,

And have grown into a better person..

The hardship builds my character,

Although I can still be soft at hardy times,

Or see life in a different point of view,

Always weighing both ends.

For we only live once in this uncertain world,

Why bother negative acts,

Despite the fact I don't put up with them,

I rather forgive as I pitied..

I fight for rights of the voiceless,

I am determined righteous conquers all,

I dare to stand up for what I believe is impartial,

Need not say I need to warrant..

Today I saw this little fellow,

With the bird's help I am fascinated with the animal kingdom,

How kind even as acquaintance, or unknown,

I believe in Karma, I believe in possibilities.

The First Step

Well, the first step is always the hardest and once you have gotten through that stage/ step, perhaps it would ease and things would get simpler.

Coming home to see a couple of mails in the letter box with one from the RSPCA and another from Camp Quality, I was quite anxious to know what the Wombat Newsletter of RSPCA Tasmania Inc. contains. Michelle has checked it out for me and there weren't anything of interest except Shakira's Oscar's adoption news is in it. I am so proud of her little man.

As for the letter from CQ, it was the great news to formalised the news that I have been matched. Companion is encouraged to have immediate contact with her/his camper. Mind you, the first step is always the hardest. Ops, I am repeating myself, aye?! "Picking up the phone and dialing the numbers, with the brain playing tricks... What if what if..." But once the move has been made and the step taken, everything seems clearer, better and without a doubt, relieve. All is good and I am happy.

The journey begins, the path is laid,
Yet I am uncertain what lies ahead,
Knowing me, I will still try...
Because I know all is worth the try, always.

Just about an hour drive away

Last Saturday, Ed decided to bring the two of us to Greens Beach, which is just about an hour drive out of the city of Launceston (The Tamar Valley) - passing landmarks such as the Beaconsfield Mines; Rebecca Gibney's all-time favourite butcher and Exeter Bakery (which we did stop by for some pies!); the historical site of Yorktown; as well as farms and famous Tassie wineries (Ninth Island, Moore's Hill). It was a "Get in my car and you shall wait and see where I am bringing you" kind of thing with Ed. Off we went after a petrol stop at Davis Grand Central Station, Launceston.

The drive began with a beautiful day with breathtaking sights and warm company...

A walk up to to the cliff, then down to the rocky bit - sea level before heading onto the tracks which I think we did about 1.5 hours of bush-walking.

Sandy Duncanson Memorial Bursary/Award for Social Justice

Dear Family, Friends and Foes of the Law Faculty of the University of Tasmania,

In the near future the family and friends of Sandy Duncanson intend to establish a fund to finance an annual Social Justice bursary in perpetuity. The bursary will be available to UTAS undergraduate students to seek funding for a project or activity inspired by, or that continues, the work and life of Sandy.

The initial aim is to establish an initial bursary of $1000 - $2000 a year. The eventual target is $60,000 to ensure that the fund is self-sustaining. The University Foundation is willing to match the fundraising $1 for $1. Therefore if $30,000 in funds can be raised over the next 2-3 years the University Foundation matching funds will help us reach that target.

Many of Sandy’s friends and classmates are in the early stages of their career so we expect a lot of the funds will be raised by small monthly or yearly deductions that will build this fund over time.

In the short term I am interested in hearing from people willing to support this cause by promoting it to friends, colleagues and organisations they think may be interested. Ideas for fundraising are greatly welcome. If interested please contact Rick Snell on r.snell@utas.edu.au

We hope that the first bursary will be available in mid 2011. The intention is to also hold a public lecture each year honouring Sandy. The lecture will be on how law can be made to work for the underprivileged.

Sandy’s capacity to complete his law degree while he fought cancer amazed me but his work for the less well off and needy in his short professional life was inspirational. I think with this Social Justice bursary Sandy can keep on inspiring.

Sandy Duncanson:  A Life Well Lived

On  25 June 2010, Sandy (Alexander) Duncanson lost his sixteen year battle  with cancer.  Sandy, Principal Solicitor with the Tenants’ Union of  Tasmania and Legal Aid Commissioner, was a committed advocate for social  justice and will be sorely missed by family, friends and the community  legal sector.

I first met Sandy at the Tasmanian Bar  Association conference in St Helens in 2004, shortly after we were both  employed at community legal centres.  Neither of us really had a clue  what we were doing and both of us hoped that was something our  management committees would not find out.  It was a privilege that we  were able to support each other as we found our feet over the following  years.

There were some things that you realised about  Sandy immediately.  He was wickedly funny and an animated story-teller.   He was intelligent and thoughtful, with strong, well-reasoned views and  political ideals.  He was ambitious and determined (and stubborn).  He  had a unique sense of style, managing somehow to make an earring and a  fedora look gallant. 

There were other things that took  longer to discover.  It was some time into our friendship before Sandy  told me that he had cancer and I remember how surprised I was. Sandy was  not someone who characterised himself by his illness. He did not let it  define him and often did not even let it distract him.

As  the beautiful eulogy delivered at his funeral noted, Sandy lived his  life with a special intensity.  He loved life and clung onto it with a  dogged disregard for pessimistic medical predictions.  He endured, he  persevered and he beat the odds time and time again until nobody  believed that he would ever succumb to the illness.  He demanded more  from life; more information, more experiences, more debate, more fun,  more passion, more compassion.

Perhaps as a result of this  intensity, Sandy bored easily with things he had no interest in.  He  had a distaste for small talk (although he loved a good gossip) and no  time for bureaucracy.  But if he was interested in something, if he  really thought that it mattered (be it refugee policy, housing issues or  the inexplicable axing of Joss Whedon’s masterpiece, Firefly),  he was engaged and passionate.  He could analyse a situation, identify  what needed to be done and encourage and embolden even the most timid to  take action.  That’s what made Sandy a powerful advocate; he was  logical, supportive and articulate and he always believed in what he was  fighting for.

A graduate of the University of Tasmania,  Sandy joined the Tenants’ Union in 2004 and was appointed as the  principal solicitor in 2005.  In the years that followed, he provided  guidance and support to countless tenants, developed legal expertise  within the organisation and pushed for law reform regarding minimum  standards for rental housing.  Sandy was appointed as the community  sector representative on the Legal Aid Commission in 2007 and was a  proactive advocate for ensuring that legal aid is available to those  most in need.

In his time with the Tenants’ Union, Sandy  directed numerous significant campaigns to address social injustices.   One notable and long-running tenancy battle involved the proposal to  allow a homestead in Fitzroy Place to be developed as a boarding house.   The development was recommended for approval by planners but, following  opposition from some local residents, was refused by the Council.  The  Tenants’ Union (with enthusiastic support from Sandy’s good friend, Ben  Bartl) launched a campaign in support of the housing project, including a  survey of residents, a petition to the Lord Mayor, a giant poster  displayed in the office window and active support for the landowner’s  appeal against the refusal.  Following the Resource Management and  Planning Appeal Tribunal’s decision to overturn the refusal, the  Tenants’ Union and the Tasmanian Greens orchestrated a group of  concerned, pyjama-clad individuals to stage a symbolic sleep-out on the  steps of the Town Hall to encourage the Council to allow the development  to proceed.  The Council and several residents challenged the decision  in the Supreme Court, and subsequently the Full Court, but these appeals  were dismissed.  The outcome was approval for the homeless shelter and a  victory for affordable housing and social inclusion.

Sandy  was also instrumental in the establishment of the Private Rental  Tenancy Support Service, a practical assistance group for people  experiencing difficulty with private landlords. Sandy assisted the  organisation with training, providing overviews on tenancy laws and  developing information kits for tenants.  He was a member of the  advisory committee and successfully lobbied for continued funding for  this important program.

I know that Sandy was incredibly  proud of the Tenants’ Union response to the State Government’s inaction  in relation to the recommendations of the Law Reform Institute on a  Charter of Rights for Tasmania.  Sandy was able to mobilise unions,  students, community organisations and activists to support a poster  campaign demanding a Charter of Rights which included a right to  adequate housing.  The eye-catching poster was launched with great  fanfare by an eminent group including Professor George Williams and the  campaign endured through to making submissions to the National Human  Rights Consultation in 2009.

Days before Sandy’s death, he  was pleased to hear the Attorney-General announce that the Tasmanian  government would be introducing legislation to establish a Charter of  Rights recognising social, cultural and economic rights.  Progressive  safeguards for adequate housing in Tasmania will be a fitting legacy to a  passionate and persistent social justice crusader.

Sandy’s friends and family, in collaboration with the University of Tasmania, have plans to award an annual prize in his honour to a law student who can demonstrate a commitment to social justice. Such a tribute is testament to the fact that, although Sandy’s was a life cut short, it was not a life half-lived. He achieved many things, made a difference to all that knew him and was dearly loved. His courage and energy, and his invaluable contributions to the community legal and housing sectors, will resonate and inspire for years to come.

Last week's Melbourne trip was short but sweet and amazing... Sweet and amazing would, of course, not stating the fact that the weather was horrifying and its gloominess was beyond anticipation!

There were a couple of purposes for visiting Melbourne last week (a long weekend from Tuesday evening to Sunday arvo): To see family members - those living there as well as visiting; To have a break from work - and to spend time with a certain someone; To shop (A MUST!); To see Mary Poppins (Superb! I so need to catch up with my three besties and the other close ones the next trip I am over - November.

Aunt Pauline and Cliff made Wan Ton Noodles for dinner the very first night I touched down.*yum*

I brought 14 Scallop Pies from my favourite Pie Shop (Tinnies Pies) over to Melbourne this trip around for the loved ones as well as for Ms Injera Rufus. Before the last trip, Uncles, Aunties and Injera have never tried the pies (except for Jas and Cliff). The trouble was all worth it. ;)

Alright, who doesn't like spending time with their loved ones?! Who doesn't like Aunties who can shop and eat? Oh, not forgetting sharing the "latest news and information" known as gossips? A show of hands, please? I know I do. Spent some lovely time with Aunt Mindy and Aunt Pauline. I couldn't ask for more, aye?! And check out Aunt Mindy's Steamed Buns.

The chocolate outings with Ed were incredibly good. Managed to visit Lygon Street this time around - went to Koko Black, Readings Bookstore (the late night book shop - Ed's favourite), and the famous Gelato Shop which sells the famous Durian Gelato (brrr...).

The rated 9.8 out of 10 Mary Poppins was worth every single cent paid for. I have seen quite a substantial amount of plays in Hobart and Launceston and I personally think my rating counts. It was a flawless play and I encourage people to go and watch breathtaking play. Seriously...

"Oh, and why 9.8 and not a full score?" Geraldine asked me that last night when I was talking to her. My answer was, "Nothing in life is perfect." And I agree with her when she said, "I am perfect, Enrico!" You always look perfect and flawless to me, G! *hugs*

I have been spending a lot of my time in the city during the last trip. Usually, I will either be at Uncle Will's, or Jas/Cliff's or friends' where the city is about 20 to 30 minutes drive away (too much hassle to head over to the city). How much have I missed walking the city in the evening/ night time. I truly enjoyed the walks with Ed especially being able to see Melbourne Central's architecture from a different view altogether.

Saturday's dinner @ Gingerboy! Yet another visit, yet another satisfaction guaranteed! ;)

I like the view we were seated seeing Gingerboy serves hawkers/ Asian-fusion types of food, the alley way gives out the mood I have missed as a city boy from Penang.

And, whilst strolling down the street from the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Ed and I saw this particular sign of employment - Staff Wanted, enquire within. For the traditional (correct me if I am wrong) Westerners, Fridays are Fish & Chips Day. Right? As for this particular Indian Shop, Fridays for the kitchen hand/ helper would be Frying Day - Does that mean they only serve fried food or that the kitchen hand is needed on Fridays to FRY food ONLY? (written on the employment sign: Mon to Fry-day !). Yaiks, cheeky me. Haha!

Lastly, nothing last forever. Time to hit back home on Sunday and as Ed says, "Home is where the heart is..." True enough.

WATER - Clean Water: Consumption

I apologise for the delayed post (as well as being all quiet lately) as I was away in Melbourne without the proper tools to blog. The only tool I carried with me was my iPhone which I find it incapable of blogging with the settings set on.

This is a blog post in conjunction with the Blog Action Day 2010 on October 15th. I would like to touch on the area of "Clean Water: Consumption".

Water is vital to all forms of life on this planet. It is the most abundant compound on Earth's surface, covering 70% of our planet.

Clean water is especially important to us humans as well as other life forms. In Australia, the Federal Government is undertaking a campaign called "Water for the Future" to increase the awareness of its importance. The campaign is a national approach in water reform for all Australians as this country is facing major challenges in ensuring sustainable water supply due to the drying climate and the increasing demand for day-to-day water usage.

Even with the heavy rainfall across the country the last twelve months, this country is still in need of a properly well managed and improved water management arrangements so that in the near future, water consumption is secured in both rural and urban areas. The great cause of the Australian Government should be applauded and heartened.

Of course, if residents and water users are not properly taught and/or are not managing their consumption and usage properly, whatever the Government of the day is doing would very much be argued, POINTLESS! The awareness has got to start at home and from schools.

As an essential to all forms of organisms, the water supplied to households must be of high quality which can be consumed without risks (water borne pathogens leading to diarrhea as the major health effect) or long term harm to the bodies. Humans can survive for several weeks without food, but are unable to do so without water - only a few days depending on the contributory factors and the condition of the particular individual. In the context of other living things apart from human beings, the life-balance changes when the water isn't clean. Unclean water affects lives as a whole, the ecological system will be damaged.

With the awareness - discipline and motivation - coupled with every day common sense, doing simple tasks on a daily basis level such as disposing chemicals appropriately (there are waste hazardous facilities); use "GREEN" or Earth friendly products (they have been determined as less harmful to our planet); re-using water (laundry and dishes) for the garden; do not dump rubbish into the drainage system or the rivers (I argue this is a normal practice in the 3rd world and developing countries - as I personally know of a few of these people/ families carrying out such practice!); and the list goes on...

Be mindful that every drop counts. And, every drop has to be clean too for the on-going survival of life forms on this planet! The awareness that water is vital to all life forms on this planet begins at home, in schools as well as lived out in the communities around the world.

PS, In support of this year's topic, Dad's Birthday card was from OXFAM whereby the cause is that for each card sold, the money is used to buy a water filter for one household in Cambodia (one card one water filter - WHAT A GREAT CAUSE!).

My flatmate celebrates her 23rd birthday. This year, she has got a special someone all the way from home to celebrate with her that is, her Mum. ;) How lucky, aye?! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MICHELLE! A small pleasant birthday dinner with her at Jaclyn/ Vivien's Crib. Michelle and I... The birthday girl is family to me. Going into our 6th year of friendship; living together, seeing each other all the time, went through and still going through life together, and the list of things continues... PS, I am trying out the Caption setting for photos as well as trying to figure out the layout of the latest introduced layout settings! It is very challenging - so all is in one paragraph! Blah!

Public Holiday at its best?

Daylight Saving started last Sunday and for those in Malaysia who do not know, it is now three hours time difference (Australia - Malaysia). My sincere apology for not notifying earlier on my previous two to three blog posts.

Launceston Show Day 2010 is on tomorrow which means it is a public holiday for the Northern part of Tasmania. Pity it is a Thursday and not a Friday. If it is the latter we would have had a long weekend but since when a Show Day is on a Monday or a Friday?! Whatever day it is, as long as it is a holiday I am happy. ;)

Should I pull something out from Stephanie's cookbook and see what can I make for lunch? Michelle's Mum is still around until Friday so she could be my 'guinea pig' to test out the recipes.

And, how cautious should you be with the shop owner/ the person serving you (if the person is a matured age lady) when you enter a take away shop and a sign such as this is hanging at the cash counter? I would be wary of my actions and tone of voice - just in case! =P

Homemade Chilli Oil

Ingredients:

1.5 cups Cooking oil

1/3 cup Chilli flakes

3 cloves Garlic - finely chopped

A generous pinch of salt [Or, substitute salt with 1/3 cup of dried shrimp (or 1.5 tsp of shrimp paste). Wash and soak shrimp in hot water for 30 minutes. Drained and dap with kitchen towel before sauteing process.]

Methods: Add chilli flakes when oil is moderately heated (and dried shrimp/ shrimp paste if salt is substituted) and turn heat to the low. Saute for 5 minutes or more depending on the temperature of the oil (CAUTION: Do not burn flakes). Then, add garlic (and salt - if no shrimp) and saute until garlic is brownish. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Store oil in a container/ glass bottle. Always use a dry clean spoon to scoop oil.

NOTE: If you have got some fresh Kafir leaves (or Lemon leaves), use 2-3 leaves. Slice them thinly and add to oil for sauteing at the same time when you add the garlic. The Kafir leaves will give the oil an extra Asian "delicacy punch" of taste/ aroma.

Warm scores on the weekend

Friday evening was nice as I got to catch up with a few friends. Went to the movies with Ed and watched "Tomorrow when the war began" and enjoyed it - a well written script and great directing.

Then, came the warm Saturday and Sunday. Grand Final 2010 for Aussie Football League was on Saturday - rematch; due to a draw the previous Saturday. I, on the other hand, was away from Launnie (an hour drive out from Launnie, at Camp Banksia, Port Sorrell). I had to attend the fun and awesome Camp Quality Tasmania's Day Camp (to re-train all existing volunteers and new volunteers); caught up with some Camp friends.

Enjoyed Saturday evening's dinner at Blue Cafe Bar with Ed but pity the lighting wasn't that good and all photos of the food and the people (*Ed) turned out to be dark and not-so-presentable.

Sunday came and finally, I was able to meet up with Shakira. Our busy schedules aren't allowing regular meet ups. Went to her crib after Red Cross, had a some catching up with Ariel, played with her babies, and then off to lunch at Elaia Cafe. Lunching at the Elaia's was a thumb's up. But the time spent with S was a double thumb's up! It has been awhile since we have seen each other.

My birthday present from S and Ariel - two plain doggie t-shirts and a car's sticker "dog is my co-pilot" which I doubt, and they know, that I will stick it on my Red Hot Chilli Pepper. It has been placed amongst my valuables though. ;)

Okay, I do not know what's up with the settings for blogger.com but I did rotate the photo before uploading it. This has been happening quite often with some other photos lately after the introduction of the new settings! I am contemplating paying for a web host.

Nanna Naps are always important when it comes to weekends. ;) I should call them the much needed charger.

Yesterday was known to be the warmest day in Launnie since late Autumn, I was glad that Ed and I had bush walking on our what-to-do list. The warm day was maximised. I have missed outdoor activities apart from walking the kids.

Dinner last night was Steamboat (aka Hot Pot) - prepared by Mich and her Mum. Dessert was Ed's muffins (all healthy, yummy and good!).

I turned the envelope over, forgetting that my bladder was actually quite full (ops!), I saw the sender’s name: Lennard Gooi!

This year, the topic for Blog Action Day is WATER.

WHY Water?

Right now, almost a billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water. That’s one in eight of us.

Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren't strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses.  90% of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are to children under five years old. Many of these diseases are preventable. The UN predicts that one tenth of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply and sanitation.

But, water moves beyond just a human rights issue. It’s an environmental issue. An animal welfare issue. A sustainability issue. Water is a global issue, deserving a global conversation.

You don't need to be a water expert to participate — you just have to be interested in joining thousands of other bloggers from more than 100 countries in collectively raising awareness of one of the most important issues facing our world.
